Chris Tucker is an American stand-up comedian and actor. He is best known for his several outstanding roles as Detective James Carter in Rush Hour film series, and as Smokey in the 1995 American stoner comedy film Friday. He also became a stand-up comedy performer in 1990s on the HBO television series Def Comedy Jam.
Christopher Tucker was born on August 31, 1971 in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the youngest son of six children of Mary Louise and Norris Tucker. At an early age, Tucker discovered that humor will draw an attention to himself both at school and at home.
He moved to Los Angeles after he graduated high school in Columbia High School, to pursue a career both in comedy and acting.
Tucker first showcased his comedy skills in local Atlanta comedy clubs, then decided to moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career in becoming a comedian. He performed mostly on Def Comedy Jam in 1992, and made his cinematic debut in the 1994 American comedy film House Party 3. He received a greater film recognition in the 1995 film, Friday, together with rapper Ice Cube.
Tucker starred as "Detective James Charles" in the 1998 martial arts action-comedy film Rush Hour and its sequels alongside actor Jackie Chan. The film was a huge commercial success, he earned a $20 million worth salary for Rush Hour 2, and $25 million for Rush Hour 3. He also received 20% of the gross from the Rush Hour 3.
Tucker claims that he was not paid for the film Friday and did not reprised his role as "Smokey" in Next Friday and Friday After Next. He participated in the NBA All-Star Weekend's Celebrity Game which happened on February 13, 1999, together with other celebrities.
He made a comeback in stand-up comedy in 2011, and starred in the film Silver Linings Playbook the next year. Tucker hosted the 2013 BET Awards.
Tucker and ex-wife Azja Pyor has a son named Destin. He flew with Kevin Spacey, Jeffrey Epstein, Bill Clinton, and Ghislaine Maxwell to Africa on 2002, as part of a humanitarian trip where Bill Clinton raised awareness around for HIV/AIDS.
Tucker is also a good friend of actor Jackie Chan, and singer Michael Jackson.
His career was influenced by Jackson, and he is also seen dancing to "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" single of Jackson, in a scene in Rush Hour 2.
In the year 2014, he settled a $2.5 million tax debt. In a 2014 interview, Tucker mentioned that he no longer uses profane words in his performances due to his Christian faith.
At the peak of Tucker's career, he was the highest-paid actor in the world in 1990s. Despite of experiencing financial problems on the past years, he has an estimated net worth of $5.2 million as of today, 2021.
