Hoda Kotb is known as an Egyptian-American broadcast journalist, television personality and as an author. She works as a main co-anchor on NBC's news morning show, "Today" and a former correspondent on NBC's television news magazine program, "Dateline NBC".

Early Life

Kotb was born on August 9, 1964 in Norman, Oklahoma. Her parents, Sameha and Abdel Kader Kotb, are from Egypt. She has two siblings: her sister, Hala, and her brother, Adel. Her mother worked at the Library of Congress, and her father was a fossil energy specialist before he died in 1986, at the age of 51.

She was elected as the homecoming queen, got chosen to speak at her graduating class's baccalaureate service and graduated from Fort Hunt High School in 1982. Kotb attended Virginia Tech in college, and graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism.

Career

Kotb started her career at CBS, with an affiliate station in Greenville, Mississippi. In 1980s, she worked as a reporter at ABC in Moline, Illinois and became a weekend anchor and reporter in the year 1989 to 1991 at CBS and also worked as an anchor and reporter in CBS affiliate WWL based in New Orleans, Louisiana.

In April 1998, Kotb joined NBC News as a correspondent for all NBC News Platforms and for the weekly television newsmagazine "Dateline NBC". In September 2007, she became the first host for the first fourth-hour morning of the news and talk morning television show, "Today" that broadcast at 10 A.M and was later on joined by co-host Kathie Lee Gifford in April 2008. Kotb was named as co-anchor of  "Today", in January 2018 together with Savannah Guthrie. Her former co-anchor Matt Lauer was dismissed due to the accusations of sexual harassment.

Books

Kotb has already published several books, including a New York Times autobiography "Hoda: How I Survived War Zones, Bad Hair, Cancer, and Kathie Lee" in October 2010. She released her second book on January 15, 2013, "Ten Years Later: People Who Faced Adversity and Transformed Their Lives" and released her third book, "Where They Belong: The Best Decisions People Almost Never Made".

Her sixth book, "I Really Needed This Today" was released in October 2019. The book includes her views and personal notes about her life experiences and relationships, and a variety of quotes. Kotb has also published her own children books. Her first book was released in 2018, and her second book was released in March 2019.

Personal Life

Kotb married Burzis Kanga in the year 2005. Burzis was a former tennis coach at the University of New Orleans. The two ended their marriage and got divorced in 2008.

In the year 2007, she underwent to mastectomy for breast cancer, and became an advocate to raise breast cancer awareness after her experience. Kotb announced on "Today" that she had adopted a baby girl on February 21, 2017, and on April 16, year 2019, she announced on "Today" via a phone interview that she had adopted a second baby girl. Kotb became engaged to Schiffman in 2019.

Kotb has received several awards in her career as a broadcast journalist, including her first "Gracie Awards" in the year 2003 and 2008, the "Edward R. Murrow Award", "Peabody Award" in 2006, the "Webby Award" in 2015, and was awarded a "Daytime Emmy Award" for Outstanding Informative Talk Show Host in 2019.
