Early Life

Julia Scarlett Elizabeth Louis-Dreyfus was born on January 13, 1961 in New York City. Her mother was a writer and special needs tutor. Her father is a financier and retired chairman of the Louis-Dreyfus Energy Services. Their family business is very successful and earning up to $4 billion. However, her parents divorced in 1962, a year after she was born.

As a young girl, Louis-Dreyfus is not sure of what she wants to be when she grows up. She attended Northwestern University and studied drama. She is a member of the Delta Gamma sorority, but left the group to focus on her career. In 2007, she received an honorary doctor of arts degree from the University.

Louis-Dreyfus appeared in the Second City as part of her comedic training. She performed at the Golden 50th Anniversary Jubilee of The Practical Theatre Company. Her performance gave her the chance to be part of Saturday Night Live from 1982-1985. At the age of 21, she was the youngest female cast member of the show.

The show aired for two seasons and was cancelled after. Louis-Dreyfus later played the role of Elaine Benes on NBC's Seinfeld, which aired from 1989 to 1998. The role brought fame to her; she was a regular winner and nominee at television award shows. After Seinfield, she lent her voice to Disney Pixar's A Bug's Life and The Simpsons.

Louis-Dreyfus got the lead role of U.S. Vice President Selina Meyer for the television comedy series Veep. She spoke with two former vice presidents, speechwriters, chief of staff of various offices and schedulers, and senators in preparation for her role. Meyer is a scheming vice president and is dreaming of becoming president. The show started in 2012 and ends in 2015.

Louis-Dreyfus and William Brad Hall have been married for over 30 years. Hall is also an actor, comedian, director, and writer. He is known for creating a sitcom entitled The Single Guy. They’ve created a show entitled Watching Ellie. Their union was blessed with two sons: Charlie and Henry.

In 2017, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. On October 18, 2018, she guested on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and announced that she is cancer-free.
