Early Life

Portman was born with a birth name Neta-Lee Herslag on June 9, 1981 in Jerusalem. Her family moved to the U.S. when she was three years old. She went to Syosset High School and attended Harvard University, where she earned her psychology degree. The actress also took a graduate course at Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Portman turned down an offer from a Revlon representative to become a child model when she was 11 years old. She found modeling to be mundane and decided to focus on acting.

Movies

Portman had her movie debut in 1994 for being part of Luc Besson’s action drama Leon: The Professional. She played the role of Mathilda Lando, an orphan who befriends a middle-age hitman named Leon Montana (Jean Reno). Leon takes in Mathilda after her family is murdered by Norman Stansfield. Mathilda then learned the hitman's trade.

In 1999, Portman became part of The Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. She played the role of Queen Padme Amidala, the fourteen-year-old Queen ofNaboo. The Queen hopes to protect her planet from the blockade invasion of Trade Federation. The movie remains the highest grossing film of Portman. She then reprised her role for Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones in 2002 and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith in 2005. The Star Wars movies contributed a lot to her fame and wealth.

In 2005, she also played the lead role for the action thriller V for Vendetta. Portman portrayed Evey, an employee of British Television Network caught up in V’s mission. She shaved her head for the movie. The movie centers on the plans of V (Hugo Weaving) to overthrow a future British tyranny.

The actress became part of the psychological horror film Black Swan in 2010. She played as Nina Sayers/The Swan Queen. She had an extensive training under ballerina Mary Helen Bowers to prepare for the role. The movie centers on the struggles of Nina after getting the lead role for Swan Lake. It was a box office hit earning over $329 million worldwide. She also won the Academy Awards for Best Actress.

She also appeared and produced the films The Other Woman in 2009, Hesher in 2010, and No Strings Attached in 2011.

In 2005, Portman co-starred with Chris Hemsworth in Thor. She played the role of Jane Foster, a scientist and love interest of Thor. The movie centers on Thor’s life on Earth when he was cast out of Asgard. She also became part of its sequel Thor: The Dark World in 2013. The sequel focuses on the dangerous and personal journey of Thor on Earth to stop the Dark Elves.

Portman got married to choreographer Benjamin Millepied. The couple met at the set of Black Swan. They got engaged in December 2010 and tied the knot on August 4, 2012. They have two children, Aleph born in June 2011 followed by Amalia in February 2017.

Awards

Portman received various awards and nominations. She won the Teen Choice Awards’ Choice Movie Actress: Action for Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. The actress also received a Saturn Awards Best Actress in a Film for V for Vendetta. She has also won two Golden Globe Awards, a SAG Award, and a BAFTA Award.
