Rumors spread that Steve sent his son to become a member of Spurs to act as his spy. Steve made it clear in the Game 2 pregame press conference that Nick is not acting as his spy.

“He loves his team, he’s dying to win and he’s dying to beat us just like we are dying to beat them. He’s unbelievably loyal to Pop and his players and I couldn’t be more proud of him. He doesn’t want any of the attention so I think maybe the jokes are over, we need to move past that, poor guy.” - Steve Kerr

Popovich used to coach Steve for four years and they won two championships together. Their past good relationship probably helped Nick to get the internship.
