Sue Bird is a well-known women's basketball player. She is the point guard of Seattle Storm of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She won an Olympic gold medal, a WNBA Championship, and an NCAA Championship.
Suzanne Brigit Bird was born on October 16, 1980 in Syosset, New York. Bird's love for sports was influenced by her older sister, Jen, who is also an athlete. She studied at Syosset High School and began playing Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball in 6th grade. For her high school education, she went to the Christ the King Regional High School. She continued playing basketball, in which her team won the New York State Championship in the second season. Her performance earned her a Women Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All American award.
Bird decided to go to the University of Connecticut despite being recruited by Stanford and Vanderbilt. She played for the Huskies team and won two National Championships.
Bird's professional basketball career started when she became the first overall pick by Seattle Storm for WNBA in 2002. During her rookie year, she played 32 games for the club. In 2004, she won the first WNBA Championship and a gold medal in the Olympics. She contributed a lot to the club's success. The club won in the 2010 FIBA World Championship, 2012 Olympics champion, and 2016 Rio Olympics.
Bird also played overseas for Dynamo Moscow in 2004-2006. She also played for Spartak Moscow Region in 2006-2011, and UMMC Ekaterinburg in 2011-2014. She missed the 2012 season due to her knee injury.
On February 16, 2016, Bird extended her contract with the Storm. During their match against Washington Mystics on July 8, 2018, she recorded a season-high 21 points. She was also honored at the 2018 WNBA All-Star game. Another gold medal was added to her accomplishments after winning the 2018 FIBA Women's World Cup.
On July 20, 2017, Bird revealed that she's a lesbian and is dating soceer player Megan Rapinoe. The pair met at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics where they shared in an interview at the ESPNW Women and Sports Summit. The two appeared in ESPN’s body issue in 2018, making them the first openly gay couple to do so.
Bird wrote a response to US President Donald Trump on July 2, 2019 regarding the latter’s feud with Rapinoe. It was rooted when Rapinoe stated that she will not visit the White House when they won the World Cup.
