Eighteen countries start with the letter C, China, Cyprus, Canada, Comoros, Cabo Verde, Chad, Chile, Central African Republic, Czech Republic, Colombia, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Côte d'Ivoire, Croatia, Democratic Republic Of Congo, Republic Of Congo, Cuba and Cameroon.

Each of the 18 countries has interesting history, geography and culture. Many of the countries are well known for their natural beauty, and others for their man-made wonders. What they all have in common is that they begin with C.

1. China

China is a located in East Asia and is the world's most populous country, with over 1.4 billion people. The official language of China is Mandarin, which is spoken by over 80% of the population. Other languages spoken in China include Wu, Yue, Min and Xiang. The capital of China is Beijing, which is also the country's largest city with 21 million inhabitants.  The currency of China is the yuan. The economy of China is the world's second largest, behind the United States, and has been growing at a high rate.

The People's Republic of China has a rich history and culture, which is evident in its many ancient ruins and temples. Some of the most famous tourist destinations in China include the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the Terracotta Warriors, and the Bund in Shanghai.

Cyprus is an island nation located in the eastern Mediterranean sea. The country is home to over 1.2 million people, and its capital city is Nicosia. Cyprus gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1960, and has been a member of the European Union since 2004. The country is a high-income economy, and is known for its copper exports (strangely enough) and tourism industry. Most importantly for our list, it starts with C.

3. Canada

Home to over 35 million people, Canada is the second-largest country in the world by landmass and is located in North America. It's also one of the most diverse, with different cultures and languages represented within its borders. It's capital, Ottawa, is located in the east of the country. Other large cities like Montreal and Toronto are located nearby.

Quebec is home to over 8 million Canadians and many residents there speak french. In fact, French is the only official language in Quebec. Outside of Quebec, English is the predominant language spoken in Canada.

4. Comoros

Comoros is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa. The country is made up of three main islands: Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli. The capital and largest city is Moroni. There is a fourth island called Mayotte in the archipelago but its sovereignty is contested with France. The official languages are Comorian, French and Arabic.

5. Cabo Verde

Cabo Verde (also known as Cape Verde) is an archipelago located in the central Atlantic Ocean located ~500km off the coast of Senegal. The country is made up of 10 major volcanic islands. The largest island is Santiago and it is where the capital Praia is located. The population of Cabo Verde is around 550,000 people. The official language is Portuguese, however Creole is also spoken.

Chad is a landlocked country in Africa that is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, the Central African Republic to the south, and Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria to the west. The country is home to over 16 million people and around 1 million of whom live in the country's capital, N'Djamena. French and Arabic are the official languages in Chad, although numerous other languages are also spoken.

Chile is a country located in South America. It is bordered by Argentina to the east, Bolivia and Peru to the North. The capital and largest city in Chile is Santiago. Chile is the longest country in the world from North to South at 4720km. From the driest place on Earth, the Atacama Desert, to the lush green rainforests of the south. The Andes mountain range runs through Chile and provides some stunning scenery.

Insular Chile is a group of islands under the administration and includes Easter Island, Isla Salas y Gómez, the Juan Fernández Islands and Islas Desventuradas.

8. Central African Republic

The Central African Republic is a landlocked country in the heart of Africa. The Central African Republic has a population of over 4.5 million people and covers an area of over 600,000 square kilometers. The capital and largest city is Bangui. The Central African Republic is bordered by Cameroon to the west, Chad and Sudan to the North, South Sudan to the east and the Republic of Congo to the south.

9. Czech Republic

Czechoslovakia is a country in Central Europe. bordered by Germany to the west, Austria to the south, Slovakia to the east and Poland to the north. Czech is the official language of the country. The Czech Republic has a population of over 10.5 million people and the capital is Prague. Other major cities include, Brno, Ostrava, Plzen and Olomouc.

10. Colombia

Colombia is a country located in the northwest of South America. It borders both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, making it a strategic location for trade. The territory of Colombia is made up of three main regions: the Andes mountain range, the lowlands of the Amazon basin, and the Caribbean coastal region. The capital city of Colombia is Bogotá.

The Republic of Colombia has a population of over 50 million, making it the second most populous country in South America. The official language of Colombia is Spanish, although there are also many other languages spoken but the Indigenous peoples throughout the country.

11. Cambodia

Cambodia is a country located in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by Thailand and Laos to the north, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. The official name of Cambodia is the Kingdom of Cambodia. The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh. The population of Cambodia is over 16.5 million.

Cambodia has a rich culture that is heavily influenced by Buddhism. The country is also known for its beautiful temples, including the Angkor Wat Temple. The official language of Cambodia is Khmer. However, English is also widely spoken. Cambodia has a tropical climate with a rainy season towards the end of the year.

12. Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a small, Central American country with a rich biodiversity. The country is home to many diverse species, and its rainforest and coastlines are teeming with wildlife. Costa Rica is also one of the most environmentally friendly countries in the world, with a high percentage of its electricity coming from renewable sources, predominantly hydropower.

13. Côte d'Ivoire

Côte d'Ivoire is a country located in West Africa. The official language is French, and the currency is the West African CFA franc. The population is around 26 million people, and the capital city is Yamoussoukro. Abidjan is the most popular city with ~5 million residents.

Croatia is a Central European country with a long coastline on the Adriatic Sea. It’s known for its beautiful beaches, Medieval towns and Venetian architecture. Inland are rugged hills and mountains, including Croatia’s highest peak, Mt. Dinara. The capital, Zagreb, is home to a lively cultural scene.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (Congo-Kinshasa), formally known as Zaire the second largest country in Africa, behind Algeria. Despite the country's size it has just 37 kilometers of coastline. The capital is Kinshasa. The country is the fourth most populous in Africa, with over 89 million people. French is the official language but there are four national languages, Lingala, Swahili, Kikongo and Tshiluba. Congo begins with the letter C so we have included it in our list. Virunga National Park in the east of the country and is home to a significant number of the worlds gorilla population.

The Republic Of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville) is a country in Central Africa. The capital of the Republic Of Congo is Brazzaville. It is a former French Colony and the official language is French. Congo comes from the word Bakongo, a Bantu tribe present in both the RC and DRC.

Visitors to the island of Cuba are often charmed by its people and its culture. It's history with Fidel Castro is studied in schools all over the world. The Republic of Cuba is also known for its famous cigars! There are also many restaurants and bars in Havana where visitors can enjoy traditional Cuban cuisine and music. Cuba consists of many islands and archipelagos, including, Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago and Isla de la Juventud.

18. Cameroon

Cameroon is a country in Central Africa with a population of over 25 million people. The official languages are French and English. The country is divided into 10 regions, each headed by a governor. The capital, Yaoundé is in the Central region.
